When you are living wholly for God and giving him honor for all, and the Spirit is continuously upon you then you also demonstrate a changed heart, a changed life. The fruits of your life get demonstrated. That can also have an immediate impact on the world around you.
Over the last two to three decades, we have allowed ourselves to fall for the advertiser’s rationale for all the unhealthy food we eat. It started when the US government allowed genetically modified foods (GMO) into our food supply. It started small. A little high-fructose corn syrup here, a little dextrose chemical there, and before we knew it, our food started to hurt us. It is actually causing illnesses and obesity at alarming rates. And the scary part of it all is that as a nation, as a people group, we didn’t even realize what was happening. It was a subtle change, and now, we are so addicted to the corn by-products that we cannot get enough of them, even when it is killing us.
There is a distinct parallel with the fruits of the Spirit. The Fruit of the Spirit are the by-product of living a life led by God and His Holy Spirit. The Fruit are love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. This is how people will know that you are different. They will see all of these things evident in your life. They will be drawn to you.
The problem is we have allowed the culture to seep into our Christian beliefs, just like we allowed GMO, hormones, antibiotic, and other chemicals into the food. Christians have allowed their sinful nature to seep back into their life and start to re-define the fruits. Instead of living like we are new creations (2 Corinthians 5:17) where our sin nature has been paid for by the blood of Jesus, we have allowed the culture to reshape our theology. This is like allowing genetically modified organisms into your spiritual body. When we accept Jesus as our Savior, we become a new creation, a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God (1 Peter 2:9). Instead we are living like the world, with little discernible difference than the non-believer.
The consequence is that our fruit has none of the nutrients it was designed for. It causes sickness, disease and perversion. In Galatians 5:19–21 describe what modified Fruit of the Spirit look like. It looks like sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like.
It is easy to see how many of the troubles Christians face today are due to letting the culture into our lives and creating modified Fruit of the Spirit. It explains why 50 percent of Christian men struggle with pornography and why Christian couples have the same divorce rate as non-Christians. It explains why books and movies glorify darkness and witchcraft have become so popular. It explains why commercialism and greed has become the idol of America, even among Christians. It explains why people are always comparing themselves to others and being jealous of what they don’t have versus being content with what they do. It explains why there is such a division in our politics, race, and gender. We are no longer able to have an open honest debate without anger and discord coming in. It explains how we are bombarded with images and slogans that promote drunkenness, orgies and experiencing of every sexual desire.
The good news is we can turn this around. We just need to get the GMO out of our Fruit of the Spirit, just like we need to get it out of our food. How do we do that? In food, you simply look for the orgnaic label. For Christians, it is when we decide to live a life wholly dedicated to Jesus. We decide to truly live as a royal priesthood, a holy nation. We allow the Holy Spirit to take back control of our lives. We allow ourselves to believe we are a new creation. Stop thinking like we are sinners saved by grace. We were sinners, but grace and the blood of Jesus turned us into a new creation. A creation that is perfect in the eyes of the Father. We are His firstborn sons and daughters. We are co-heirs to the Kingdom. We have been given power and authority to rule this earth, the way God intended us to. We just need to flush all of the world and GMO out of our systems and fill it up with the mind of Christ. We have to embrace a new mindset and a renewing of our mind.
Let the Holy Spirit wash away all the junk and get back to the true Fruit of the Spirit and let His love, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control come through for the whole world to see. These are the items that allow others to notice you are different. So we can expand our influence to those around us and to those we come in contact.
